DENVER (KDVR) — Coloradans are feeling the pain from a sharp rise in property tax assessments. On Monday, Gov. Jared Polis announced a plan that could soften the impact when you pay your property taxes next year. But there is something you can do about it right now: You can file an appeal. "Homeowners are freaking out!" said Kelly Moye with Compass Real Estate and spokesperson for the Colorado Association of Realtors. "Our phones have been ringing off the hook." Land use bill passes amid tension between parties Moye has already helped 20 clients who had questions about the eye-popping property tax assessments they received in the mail this week."They think that what the assessment says is not what it is worth today, and that is accurate," Moye said. The assessed value is taking the market value from January 2021 through June 2022."That happened to be up 35%," Moye said. DENVER (KDVR) -- It isn't just the Centennial State. Colorado's land-use bill is a local example of a zoning policy discussion happening in state legislatures across the nation. The original bill would have preempted local land control, requiring 30% of single-family zoned land to be rezoned for denser development. Representatives heavily amended the bill, however. Instead, the bill would create a state board to review land use issues. House members debate drastically changed land-use bill Across the country, the measures seek some kind of pressure valve for housing prices, which have mushroomed in price in the last decade and particularly in the West. As with Colorado's bill, some are bipartisan. Arizona, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Montana, Nebraska, North Carolina, Oregon, Utah, Virginia and Washington have each considered some kind of state control measure in the last five years, according to a policy analysis group Lincoln Institute of ...
